Queen’s Park – On the morning of September 30th, 2013, Tory Leader Tim Hudak completed a portfolio shuffle which saw Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, assigned the role of PC Critic for Tourism and Culture. Scott will maintain her portfolio as the PC Critic for the Ontario Women’s Directorate.
“My riding of Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock sees tens of thousands of tourists to the area every year,” stated Scott “so leading this portfolio is very exciting for me.”
Scott is keen on driving home the economic advantages that a strong tourism industry has for Ontario. “Tourism in Ontario is a $22 billion a year industry. While this is significant, we need to promote Ontario as one of the premier tourist destinations in the world in order to grow our economy.”
Scott is also well aware of the positive effects that a thriving Culture industry can have on a province. “The Culture sector generated nearly $19.7 billion for Ontario economy, and it employs more than 250,000 Ontarians.”
A 2010 Environics survey showed that 95% of Ontarians said that the arts enrich the quality of their lives. Scott acknowledged that “while there is a significant economic benefit to having a thriving Culture sector, Ontarians can also continue to have their lives enriched with the continuation of strong culture and arts programs.”
“It’s time to get to work to improve the Tourism and Culture economy for all of Ontario.”
